Where to start with AS3 for Flashpunk?

Postby SuperFieroStatus » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:39 am

The only code I know is HTML/CSS. Nothing else.

I wanted to learn AS3 and make some games, so I checked out Zachary Lewis' tuts and I'm getting COMPLETELY lost around video 3. I understand that those videos are for people who already know flash and want to learn Flashpunk specifically.

I've checked out Lynda.com and the MJW tutorials but those all use Flash CS3-CS5, not FlashDevelop and Lynda is talking about timelines or something...What?

I see none of that crap in the Flashpunk tuts.

All I want to know is where do I go to understand the code within those Flashpunk tutorials? I don't care about timelines or any functions in Flash CS5 and I don't want to make animations. I want to make games. With Flashpunk.

Have you gone through the beginner tutorials? If you're looking for flashpunk help in particular, the official forums would probably be the best place to ask for pointers.

I found these tutorials here to be quite helpful when I was starting out. The flash game dojo's snippets are really great too if you haven't already checked them out.

But yeah, probably most helpful are the beginner tutorials mentioned above, and the forums(most questions you could have have probably already been answered on there).

Hope this helps :)

Something I found very useful in learning FlashPunk was downloading Noel Berry's Open Source Platform Engine and playing around with it. It's well-documented and pretty straightforward, and just fiddling with that is a pretty good way to learn the basics of FlashPunk development.
