Mysticism Pageant: Joan of Arc OMGMMORPGRTS [DONE] SERVER UP

Postby bushmango » Tue Sep 27, 2011 6:02 pm

----
Update: DONE! Finished Episode One!

The story is about Joan of Arc's battles to free all of France from English invaders, and her quest given to her by the "Saints"

The single-player "Joan of Arc" campaign game is 7 battles long, with stories "cutscenes" before each battle, as well as two tutorial levels.

Also included are 6 or so bonus 2-player co-op missions as well as PvP with custom armies. Yeah, I ended up cramming a lot of content into this contest :)

Windows Only

No sound yet -- I might sneak in an update tomorrow with sound.
I plan on updating the website a bit tomorrow as well, and I'll write a postmortem in the next few days.

Here's a screenshot, I'll post additional screenshots in a new post below.

Original entry follows:
----
Description:

Everyone always says, "Indie developer X, don't make an MMO! It's way out of your budget and timeframe!"

Also, "MMORTS? Not possible!"

So I logically took the challenge and decided to combine them into a MMORPGRTS. And do it in 30 days. And make it free-to-play (FTP)

Oh, and everything is done by me. XNA 4 + FlatRedBall engine. That means Windows only, sorry :(

So, here's what I got so far:

Website:
http://www.OMGMMORPGRTS.com

Status
You can download and play it right now! (Let me know if anything doesn't work or if the server goes down, thanks!)

It seems pretty stable but then again I haven't had more than two people playing at once :) It should support about 200 people... in theory...

What works well:
- 2 Player Co-op and 2 Player PvP!

I'm still working on:
- Story -- I have the mysticism story in my head, I'm working on adding it into the game.
- Single Player -- This goes along with Story, I'm still fleshing out the single player campaign
- More PvP options

Thanks for this great contest!

Please comment here, or comment/follow the project on twitter: OMGMMORPGRTS

And <3 to all constructive criticism.

Oh also, we'll see if I get any sound in the 30 day version. I have no clue how to make music for it -- anyone want to team up and contribute some music or sounds? :)

I'll continue working on it after this contest is done as well, as long as I get some interest.

this looks really ambitious, and I commend you for that. You'll grow much more quickly as a developer if you take on projects way beyond your scope, even (especially!) if you fail at making them. I want to encourage you to stick with this for the 30 days, it seems like a great learning experience. If it doesn't work out you can always go back to pong, anyway :)

Or... MYSTIC Pong!

Re: Mysticism Pageant: OMGMMORPGRTS [ALMOST DONE]

Postby bushmango » Fri Sep 30, 2011 1:10 pm

Almost done... I'm working on a single player campaign focusing on the life of Joan of Arc currently.

There's the 0.9 release out on the website right now, but by this afternoon I should have the 1.0 release out with a full single player campaign. I'm hoping to write a postmortem this weekend.

In game action!

The title screen. Your password and username are sent via SSL! (secure, like https) That took me a while to get working.

Here's the different game mode. "1. Joan of Arc" is the single player campaign.

Here's all of the Joan of Arc levels. You can do them in any order or skip ones if they are hard or if you just want the story. But it's better to do it in order :)

One more :)

Showing how you can create custom armies. in Player vs. Player (PVP) both parties get to place custom armies in real time ( you can react to what your opponent is putting down)

Units are balanced by abilities and points. Like a complicated rock paper scissors game.

Re: Mysticism Pageant: Joan of Arc OMGMMORPGRTS [DONE] SERVE

Postby Radiatoryang » Wed Oct 05, 2011 3:40 am

I tried this out... it's pretty neat. I think the graphics really limit its appeal though. Even if you have to borrow someone else's temporary sprites, I think that'd be better than the (charming but crude!) stick figures. Plus, the screenshots would probably look a great deal more enticing too. (maybe from graphics packs like the ones listed at http://funplosion.com/free-assets.html )

If I have a suggestion, it's that on a trackpad I found the "hot spots" to click to select a unit were too small. I wished I could zoom in (especially since only 10% of the board is in use anyway) and just scroll the camera to make it easier to move stuff around.

There are also too many modes. Maybe that was the point. But still, condense it!

Thanks for your reply, I think you are right on all counts :)

I just put those stick figures in as placeholders -- I have an animation engine I'd like to use for it if I decide to continue to pursue this project.

I haven't quite figured out how to make the clicking more accurate, but zooming in is a good idea.

Yeah, too many modes... that was me going overboard and always creating more things to try out with my bro, the main tester, to figure out what was fun. Overwhelming to a tester though.
