I don't know about you, but I'm sick of current space "exploration" games. They give you a hundret planets which all look the same, because they only have 5 texturesets. Then you meet alien races who are just like us, building spaceships and shit. And then you spend the entire game shooting each other.
I want to build a real space exploration game, with heavy focus on exploration.
I read a lot about the world and the universe in the last months. Astronomers seem to agree that it is highly unrealistic that we, as a race, will ever be able to leave the solar system. Even in the, highly unrealistic, case that we are able to build ships that travel at lightspeed, it would take 20-30 years to reach our very neighbor solar system.
So here is the idea:
It is a to be defined year in the future. Humankind has explored the solar system with unmanned spacecraft. Apart from that, the 'golden age of space' we always dreamed about really hasn't happened. Apart from a few thousand individuals, humankind pretty much lost interest in space.
But a hundred years ago, we managed to do something highly remarkable. We beat nature, we were able to stop our bodies from aging. The world was euphoric, for a time. Then the problems with our breakthrough became apparent.
The treatment was very expensive. The rich became semi immortal, while the poor kept getting old and died, if they didn't die from hunger first. Which was the second problem. Our bodies still needed nutrition, and overpopulation became a big problem.
As long as starvation was something that happened mainly in Africa, the world sadly didn't care all that much. But now the immortal millionaires had deaths in their own families, distant relatives, but enough to care. Billions were spend, until humankind could reproduce something the universe did since the dawn of time. We managed to build a machine that could turn energy from the sun into matter. Which allowed us to gain nutrition from sunlight. Prices for gold, platinum and other precious materials dropped almost overnight, but rose again after it became apparent that sunlight wasn't enough to produce huge amounts of matter. Also, it wasn't enough to feed billions of starving people, but it was enough to feed the rich.
Long story short: Turns out being immortal bores you after a certain amount of time. There is nothing left to be done in your life. Apart from space.
You are one of the millionaires. Your body, forever 25 years old, has been on earth for almost 110 years now. And you are willing to follow a recent trend: Exploring the universe in a small 1 man vessel. The thing is darn slow, but you have time. You are put into a deep sleep while the thing moves to your destination. A small energy-to-matter generator will be able to feed you from sun-like stars.
That's the background idea for now. At the start of the game you will be able to fit your ship with different modules, but mounting slots are limited. There will be no weapons, you won't have any use for them in the vast, empty space.
The view will be inside the ships cockpit, which has no windows. You only see your ship controls, but you have the possibility to use a camera to view what's outside your ship.
The ship will wake you up on dangerous or interesting situations, and you will have to deal with them.
There will be no battles, the focus is on exploration and dealing with the hazards and problems of pioneering space travel.
I plan to have LOADS of stuff to discover. You will meet alien life, but not in the form you would expect.
So, what do you think? Is this a game you would want to play? I know I would.
