Indie compo metacalendar?

Postby mcc » Wed Oct 12, 2011 5:16 pm

Zovirl (who's posted here a few times) was complaining to me about this awhile back-- there's, like, tons of different indie compo / jam / pageant / make-a-game events and sometimes they actually overlap, it's hard to keep track of them all.

Is there something like a big directory somewhere of what the jams are and when?

Would it make sense to, like, create a group Google Calendar for this or something?

This is a good idea and it should happen.

Is there anything stopping you from making it? I don't know of any existing directory.

I could do this. I don't think I could maintain it well though, I don't follow compos closely.

I'll try to set something up tonight as a test.

Ashkin thanks!

EDIT: I DIDN'T. But I'm still going to try to set this up.

I agree that this is a good idea and something that should exist.

Should be five minutes to set up a public google calendar, I'll have a hunt around for upcoming competitions and make one.

Made this: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?sr ... Z2xlLmNvbQ

Couldn't find that many events in the near future, but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Initially added the Ludum Dare October Challenge, but it looked really ugly to have a month-long event so I took it off again. :/

Will add anyone who wants to help adding events, I definitely think there should be several people with write-permission.

This is a nice idea.
What about submission dates for the various festivals (e.g. Oct 17th for IGF) or is this too different a thing?

It's a good idea, but needs upkeep. Several people have tried (myself included, as linked above, but others also).

This thread is awesome :)

Is there any way to maintain a calendar in wiki fashion? I'm wondering if the upkeep problem would be solved by letting multiple people help with the upkeep.

Yeah, I think the best format would be one where anyone could edit, then it's just a matter of getting it out to organizers/fans. I'm not sure if spam would be a problem though.

Also, as for the October challenge, did you try just listing the start date? Maybe that would be neater.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to allow public editing. Maybe with a different online calendar tool?

Have added month-long events as a start and and end date. Should work okay.

I support this

I had also jotted down some ideas about something of the sort, but then maybe a website sort of thing.

Not that I really suggest doing that now, or really know if those jottings are useful to anyone here.

but I support this.

So I was going to say-- google calendar has some wiki-like features. You can give write permissions on a calendar to a wide group of people. I never got around to specifically figuring out how to do this. But
